Catedral de Segovia

The last great Gothic cathedral built in Spain, so graceful in its soaring pinnacles and golden stone that it is affectionately known as the Lady of Cathedrals.

About this place

The Cathedral of Segovia, rising over the Plaza Mayor, holds a special place in architectural history as the last great Gothic cathedral to be built in Spain, begun in 1525 when the Gothic style was already giving way to the Renaissance elsewhere. Perhaps because of this lateness, it is a particularly elegant and harmonious example of the style, its honey-coloured stone soaring upward in a graceful forest of pinnacles, buttresses and a tall tower, so lovely that it earned the affectionate nickname La Dama de las Catedrales, the Lady of Cathedrals. It replaced an earlier cathedral that had stood nearer the Alcázar and was destroyed during the Comuneros revolt. Inside are a soaring nave, numerous chapels, fine stained glass and a peaceful Gothic cloister, which was actually moved stone by stone from the site of the old cathedral. It is a fitting crown for the golden old town.
