New Cathedral (Mariendom)

A soaring Gothic Revival giant of pale sandstone, this is the largest church in all of Austria. Its single great spire rises high above the rooftops of Linz.

About this place

Officially the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, the Mariendom is the crowning ecclesiastical landmark of Linz and the largest church in the country by floor area and volume. Conceived in 1855 by Bishop Franz Josef Rudigier and designed by the Cologne master builder Vinzenz Statz, it rose slowly over sixty two years before its consecration in 1924. Built in the image of the great medieval cathedrals of the north, its vast interior gathers fifty four columns, seventeen altars, and more than one hundred and forty stained glass windows beneath towering vaults, offering a cool and immense counterpoint to the intimate baroque churches of the old town.

Key facts

  • 20000 people — The interior can hold this many worshippers, making it the largest church in Austria
  • 2 metres — Its spire was built exactly this much lower than Vienna's St. Stephen's tower to obey an imperial height rule
  • 62 years — Passed between the foundation stone of 1862 and the cathedral's consecration in 1924
