Classic Hallstatt Viewpoint (Gosaumühlstraße)

The spot of the world famous postcard panorama at the northern edge of the village. From here you look back south over the lakeside houses, the slender church spire, the glassy Hallstätter See and the Dachstein peaks beyond.

About this place

Tucked at the northern entrance to the village along Gosaumühlstraße, this unassuming stretch of lakeshore is the most photographed angle in the Alps. Looking south, the pastel houses of Hallstatt seem stacked impossibly between the water and the steep wooded slope of the Salzberg, with the slim neo Gothic spire of the Evangelical Lutheran church rising at the centre and the Dachstein massif closing the horizon. It is the image that has travelled the world on posters, calendars and screensavers, and the picture that turned a tiny salt mining hamlet of a few hundred residents into a global icon. The composition works because Hallstatt has almost no flat ground, so the village reflects in the still lake like a mirror, doubling its beauty at dawn and dusk.
