About this place
The Puerta de San Andrés is one of the best-preserved of the old gates in the medieval walls of Segovia, a sturdy stone gateway flanked by a square tower and a rounded one, guarding the southern edge of the old town. Beyond it lies the Judería, the old Jewish quarter, for Segovia was home to one of the largest and most important Jewish communities in medieval Castile, clustered in these streets near the gate and the Alcázar. The Jews of Segovia were prosperous and influential until their expulsion in 1492, and the quarter preserves the memory of their presence: the old main synagogue became the church of Corpus Christi, and there is a Jewish cemetery outside the walls and an old-town house restored as a centre of Jewish heritage. The gate itself houses an interpretation centre on the city walls and the Jewish quarter, and can be climbed for views.
